Accessibility checker for a site builder
Helping users to create accessibile website on the go
Background
Digital Accessibility
As a site builder, it is crucial to provide users with an experience that not only helps them build their site quickly but also enables them to create an accessible website. Phenom offers a powerful accessibility audit tool that can scan the entire website and provide valuable insights on whether it meets the WCAG compliance standards.
Concept
About Accessibility Checker
What if we could introduce this capability at the site-building level itself, allowing users to check their content's accessibility as they create it? By offering this functionality, site builders can help ensure that the content being created is accessible from the outset, saving time and effort in the long run.
With a growing emphasis on accessibility in digital spaces, such a feature would not only be valuable but also set Phenom apart from its competitors.
The Challenge
Problem Statement
Phenom gets 35-40 accessibility requests per month, which slow down the engineering and product teams and increase ticket resolution time. These requests can range from minor adjustments, such as improving color contrast or page hierarchy, to more significant issues such as missing alt text for images.
Aim
Goal
Providing real-time identification and immediate resolution of accessibility-related issues encountered by users during the site-building process.
Business Goal
Reducing the number of support tickets raised by customers for accessibility and promoting inclusive products to attract more customers.
My Role
Worked as a UX Designer in a team of 4 designers. The timeline of this task was 2 weeks including user research till the initial concept prototype
Understand existing accessibility audit infrastructure in the company and figure out things that can be included in the customer-facing accessibility feature.
Learn about accessibility (WCAG Guidelines). Categorize the issues that can be listed on user-facing feature.
Design Process

Solution
Accessibility Checker
The accessibility checker lets users audit their webpage while they are in the process of building the website.
Discovering the feature
The accessibility checker is a part of side navigation. Whenever a user is working on a specific page, they can keep an eye on the accessibility of their website.
Scanning the page
The technical limitation of not having an auto-updated accessibility checker was used as an opportunity to educate the users about accessibility as well as manually hit the scan page button to start the process.
Identify and solve
The accessibility checker highlights the issues on the page once the scanning is done. Every issue has an explanation of what is the type of issue and how can it be solved.
Future scope
The system can suggest things like accessibile set of colors to choose from and AI generated alt text instead of writing it from scratch.
Impact
Content creation became faster and better. Overall reduced time in finalizing the content.
Decreased number of support tickets. Saves overall time for all teams
Use of existing accessibility infrastructure improves inclusivity of the site as well as reduced efforts.
